Doin' It In The Park: Pick-Up Basketball, NYC
Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau, 2012, 83 min.
Doin’ It In The Park: Pick-Up Basketball, NYC explores the history, culture and social impact of New York’s summer b-ball scene, the worldwide “Mecca” of the sport... The film’s title refers as much to the subject matter as it does to the method of filmmaking, providing an unprecedented perspective on inner-city America’s most popular, and accessible, free recreation.

Triggering Wounds

From Terrorizing Streets to Making Them Safer
Kia Gregory
"In its blunt retelling of Central Harlem, the documentary opens with Dedric Hammond standing in front of a Chinese takeout restaurant near the spot where he was shot the first time....
“Triggering Wounds” is like another candle in a sidewalk memorial. The documentary was produced by the Maysles Institute Teen Producers Academy, in partnership with the Manhattan district attorney’s office and with Harlem Hospital Center, where it will be shown to gunshot and stabbing victims...
One goal, said Christine Peng, education director at the Maysles Institute, is for those involved in gun violence to “not have feelings of retaliation in the moment.'"

We're changing our name!
Maysles Institute is now the Maysles Documentary Center, www.maysles.org.

We are still the same place you know and love, only better! Over the past year our organization has gone through many changes. We have grown our education programs and now are serving more than 200 students between the ages of 3 and 65. We have expanded our cinema programming and are bringing to audiences as large as 650 people, the best in both mainstream and independent documentary film complete with inspired discussions with experts and film makers. Our new name reflects more accurately who we are, a center for documentary film in all forms--film making, viewing, education, and discussion.

The change will be gradual. For now, you will still be able to find us at mayslesinstitute.org and some of our materials will still carry the Maysles Institute name. Our address and location remain the same.
